Case study: Concluded 2016
Business problem
SAB needed a vehicle through which to do full value chain empowerment beyond the prescriptions of the scorecard in a financially sustainable yet impactful way
Solution space
Conceptualising, designing scope, and managing the procurement process of establishing a R250m (to scale up to R1bn) private equity fund to transform the value chain. The fund will be used for Enterprise Development, Supplier Development, and broader value chain opportunities. The SAB Thrive Fund is managed by The Awethu Project.
Recommendations
- Implementing a fund model to optimise on capital, recycling funds where possible
- Fund facilitates easier partnership (and co-investment) from third parties to scale impact
- Regulatory compliance is externally managed (as the fund manager is required to have all the
necessary licences)
